The signing process and your first NAV declaration

The decision is made – and now comes the part many people overcomplicate in their heads: signing. The reality: a few signatures, a turnaround of a week or two, and one important first administrative step at the next tax return. Here's the full timeline, so nothing catches you by surprise.

In short:
  • The signing process: signing the offer → underwriting → policy issue → first premium – typically 1–2 weeks.
  • The contract comes into existence once the insurer accepts it; the policy terms fix when the insurer's risk cover begins.
  • The first credit can be claimed on next year's personal-income-tax return – for the premiums paid in the year you signed.

The steps of signing

  1. Offer: I prepare the paperwork for the plan you've chosen – you sign it (today this is typically also possible electronically).
  2. Declarations: if the plan requires a health declaration, it goes directly to the insurer (details).
  3. Underwriting and policy issue: the insurer assesses the offer and then issues the policy – this typically takes anywhere from a few days to two weeks.
  4. First premium: once the first premium arrives, the contract is in force under its terms; this is the point to finalize how you'll pay (direct debit, bank transfer).

During the process, feel free to reach out with any questions that come up – coordinating the paperwork is part of my job.

What's worth settling right away at signing

These four small things keep the contract's entire life cycle in good order.

Your first NAV declaration

For the premiums paid in the year you sign, the tax credit can be claimed on next year's personal-income-tax return: the insurer sends a certificate early in the year, and NAV (the Hungarian tax authority) needs your declaration in the return's designated section – the routine: the NAV declaration in practice, with a checkable list of steps: the step-by-step list.

Before the first time, I'm glad to review the steps on request – you can check that the first credit has arrived on your policy statement, and from then on it's a yearly routine.

From when are the protection and the savings “live”?

The savings element starts building from the moment the first premium arrives. The policy terms fix when the risk benefits (death benefit, health-impairment elements) start and any waiting periods that apply – we go through this precisely at signing, so you know exactly what's in force from when.

And most importantly: signing isn't the end of the process, it's the beginning. It's worth reviewing the contract at each anniversary – if you let me know before the renewal date, I'm glad to help with that (the review).
