A good quote request isn't long – it's targeted. This list contains what's worth thinking through before I request competing quotes from several insurers: ten minutes of work, and the quotes will speak to your situation from the start, not to some average “sample client”.
In short:- The list has three blocks: basic data - cap and goal - preferences.
- Not needed: documents, a precise asset inventory, health data – these come up later, when specifically relevant.
- The data list also doubles as an outline for the needs assessment – bring it filled in, and the 20 minutes will be worth even more.
Basic data
- Year of birth (for the term and the retirement age in force at signing)
- Type of work: employee / self-employed / other (relevant to the basis for the tax credit – the self-employed article)
- Whether income is stable or variable (a structural question)
- Existing pension-related elements: pension fund / NYESZ / old policy / other – with rough amounts
Cap and goal
- A comfortable monthly amount – and the bad-month minimum (sizing it right)
- Intention for annual ad-hoc (top-up) payments: is there typically some room at year-end (making full use of the cap)
- The nature of the goal: saving to make full use of the cap / a fixed target amount / “let's start, then build from there”
- Emergency fund: is it in place (if not: that comes first – honestly)
Preferences
- Risk temperament: prefers predictability / middle-of-the-road / can tolerate volatility over the long term (the quiz can help with this)
- Appetite for involvement: I'd rather choose the funds myself / a guided path / as little to do as possible
- Rider interest: is death-benefit protection or premium waiver of interest (the components)
- Anything special: anything that matters to you (ethical funds, how much weight you give to online administration, etc.)
What happens with this information?
Based on this information, I request quotes from the relevant insurers and put together the comparison table (the methodology). Personal documents and health data aren't needed at this stage – if the product requires the latter, it goes directly to the insurer later (how).
Filling in the data list doesn't commit you to anything – even after seeing the quotes, the decision is still yours. Let's get started: a 20-minute appointment or an email with the list filled in – whichever suits you.
