When and how does the pension benefit open up?

For decades, the policy is about paying in and watching it grow – then comes the moment when the direction reverses. This article covers the practical side of when the benefit opens up: when, under what conditions, and what you need to do to get the payout process started properly.

In short:
  • Three gateways open the benefit: actual retirement, reaching the old-age retirement age in force when the policy was signed, or – typically – a health impairment of at least 40%.
  • Opening up is typically an entitlement, not an obligation – but how long the savings can stay in the contract depends on its term and terms; for a fixed-term contract, the insurer pays out at maturity.
  • Filing the claim starts through the insurer's own channel – with documents that are worth preparing in advance.

The three gateways – in practical terms

The first gateway is acquiring entitlement to an own-right pension benefit – typically evidenced by the pension authority's decision (the date of actually retiring can differ from this). The second is reaching the old-age retirement age in force when the policy was signed: here the benefit opens up even if you're still working – the rule in force at signing governs (why). The third is a health impairment of at least 40% – covered in a separate article: disability situations.

The exact definitions and ways of providing evidence are set out in the policy terms – it's worth reviewing these before you file; if you have questions, I'm happy to help.

It's open – but what does that actually mean?

Opening up is a right, not an obligation: once you reach the retirement age, you decide when to claim the benefit. Delaying can make sense – for example if you're still working and want the savings to keep growing – but the portfolio's structure is also worth weighing: as the target date approaches, a cautious allocation is the way to go (allocation).

The form of payout is also a decision: lump sum, annuity, or a combination – for the comparison, see which makes sense when. Tax treatment depends on the conditions being met: taxation of payouts.

How to file a claim

  1. Check which gateway applies, and whether the time conditions for the tax benefit are met (the 10-year rule).
  2. Gather the documents: identification papers, the pension decision or proof of retirement age, and the benefit claim form (full list).
  3. File the claim through the insurer's own channel – online portal or customer service (filing map).
  4. Assessment and payout – processing time depends on how complete the documentation is (what to expect).

Before starting the process, it's worth asking your questions: that way your submission can start with the fullest documentation possible – whether anything needs supplementing afterward is up to the insurer.

A good "endgame" starts earlier than you'd think

How smoothly the benefit opens up depends on the preceding years: allocation made more cautious as the target date approaches, up-to-date records, and a well-thought-out payout plan. These are prominent topics in the annual reviews of the final years – and the closure checklist is a complete, checkable map of the whole endgame.
